Miniature Carousel Builders Corner

The beautiful carousel art featured this month was constructed by Charles McDaniel and painted by his wife, Georgia, of Poquoson, VA. The McDaniels are members of the Miniature Carousel Builders organization and this carousel was displayed at the Valley Mall, Hagerstown, MD in the Summer of 2002.

Charlie and his wife, Georgia are experienced wood carvers and frequently demonstrate wood carving techniques during exhibits.

They donated a Crank Type carousel with a menagerie of 28 hand carved and hand painted wood animals to the Sarah Bonwell Hudgins Home for Disabled Children, Hampton, VA. To date, Charlie has built eleven carousels.

The Details:

  • Base: 40" round
  • Carousel: 30" Diameter, 24" Height
  • Twelve sweeps, three rows
  • Type: Crank Type

This carousel was built in 1999 and was under construction for nine months.

This carousel features Jumpers* operated by overhead cranks. There is a menagerie of 32 hand carved wood animals, two hand carved wood chariots and 332 lights.

All the hand carving was performed by Charlie and his wife, Georgia. Also, Georgia is an artist, and hand- painted the interior carousel pictures on canvas.

*Jumpers are animals that go up and down.
